Christmas Cracker from Montpellier Rugby Club in English

From the Montpellier Rugby site here:

The new President of Montpellier Herault Rugby Club, Philippe Deffins placed the future of Montpellier on the table on Friday afternoon at his first press conference in no uncertain terms. The words spoken were realistic but also spoken with passion, but words are one thing and as they always say “actions speak louder than words” so all this has to be backed up by the players.

Montpellier were at last, at full strength for the visit of Toulon, this being the third and thankfully the last encounter against Toulon this year, the players needed to perform to the highest of levels as Toulon were also in the search for points , their position precariously in the lower depths of the TOP 14 ORANGE, a possible banana skin situation.

Why worry, the team announced to play was full of class and the minute they started the intent was shown. This was what a Christmas crowd in excellent voice, of around 11,700 needed to see, a team proud to be playing in front of them, and their new President showing the reasons why they could well be in the H Cup next season.
The defence was ferocious and when Montpellier had ball in hand, the only way was forward, although we did suffer with a few knock on’s and wayward passes.
An early try by Mamuka Gorgodze started the scoreboard moving forward; once again he used his tremendous strength to get himself into the hallowed ground 5-0, this was quickly followed by another monster boot from Olivier Sarramea and the boys went to the break 8-3 in front.
The magic potion consumed at halftime was obviously stronger than usual as the Blue and Whites came out like men possessed. Firstly, another 2 penalties by Mr Cool, Olivier Sarramea and then Montpellier turned up the heat and they were everywhere, Club Captain Fufu took the ball to within 3 yards of the Toulon try line and the Mighty Mamuka did the rest 21-3. Francois Trinh-Duc was next in the act with a massive break of at least 80 yards which finished with a 5 yard scrum being awarded to Montpellier, the first scrum, Toulon had only reverse gear, the second that followed saw exactly the same scenario and Montpellier were awarded a forwards penalty try, the referee was extremely kind to Toulon as if we had, had a third scrum their forwards could well have been sitting in the front row of the Murryfield stand, this was duly converted by Sarramea 28-3.
Again the Mighty Mamouka was again present, this time slipping a sly ball to Thierry Brana who went over before Toulon had realised what was going on.
Just before the siren a fine dash to the line by All Black Jerry Collins who saved the honour for Toulon, final score Montpellier 33 Toulon 8. A special mention must go to the forwards who played their hearts out, especially Joan Caudullo, who led from the front, Pieter Van Neirkerk who made his presence felt the moment he came of the bench with some bone crunching drives and in your face tackling, Eugene Van Staden and Vassili Bost immense, and of course not forgetting the rest of the pack, BRILLIANT !!!
A well deserved victory, and a brilliant start to the new presidency of Philippe Deffins, the Tour D’Honneur that followed was merited and the team may well have gone round twice while soaking up their immense pleasure, Christmas will taste so much better and the wine so much sweeter.
An excellent performance guys and long may it continue. The next game in the New Year is against Toulouse away on Saturday the 3rd of January K. O. 16.30.
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL.
Steve Whittell.
