Holiday-home buyers are returning to tried and tested areas

In troubled times, old favourites fly high

The world has suddenly shrunk for holiday-home buyers. Gone are our ambitious and sometimes foolish forays into emerging destinations. Now, all we want is the relative safety of what we know best.
“We’ve seen buyers come back to core markets in the past six months: the south of France, the Algarve, Tuscany,” says Paddy Dring, head of the international department of Knight Frank estate agents. “They want the basics — political and climatic stability, and good, easy access with reliable flights or train routes.”
So, where’s hot, and where’s not, this year? 

France: Last month’s Euro­star hiccups apart, France has never been easier to get to, or across, thanks to its expanding network of high-speed train routes. Languedoc, in the southwest, is going from strength to strength, with one-off boutique projects, such as the converted 19th-century Château Les Carrasses, near Béziers, selling out quickly; many buyers were British.
