If you're staying in central Languedoc – say, the Béziers-Pézenas area – l'Espiguette is a tidy drive. Sérignan is a fine substitute. It's wild enough, with untrammelled sands, dunes and, towards the western end, great salt-meadows, but over a shorter, two-mile expanse. And, behind, there's a light scattering of slightly ramshackle development to cater to your camping, mini-golf and pizza-eating requirements. The great thing is, though, that none of this impinges on the beach. There you may breathe, bathe and laze free, like pioneer settlers.
