Saturday February 26th at 2 PM Book Club: “Mr Rosenblum’s List” by Natasha
Solomons. In this subtle and moving account of the dilemma faced by immigrants to modern. Britain we meet Jakob and Sadie Rosenblum, Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany. On arrival in England they are presented with a leaflet entitled "While You Are in England: Helpful Information", and so Jakob –or Jack, as he starts calling himself- resolves to follow it to the letter. But when he is arrested as a "class B enemy alien, he decides that he must still be getting it wrong. On his release he makes a list of English characteristics and aims to become a very English Gentleman. With helpful items such as: "The British housewife makes a purchase of haddock on Friday mornings" and rules such as: "Don't gesture with your hands when talking," Jack reinvents himself, and begins to feel that he has lost the imprint of his foreignness.  Sadie, meanwhile, is less eager to relinquish her Jewish identity, and resents her husband's fanaticism. She begins keeping a list of her own – "Remember to keep the sabbath,
remember to keep the dietary laws" – and cooks exclusively from her mother's recipe book. But these observances only heighten her sense of estrangement and she begins to feel increasingly isolated.
